Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today ordered preparing a list of those killed in attacks by terrorists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and other affiliated bodies of Awami League (AL), and also by state forces on the orders of the then government in the 15 years before the July mass uprising in 2024.
He made the order when Mohammad Barkat Ullah, father of brutally killed BUET student Abrar Fahad, Fahad’s younger brother Abrar Fayyaz and maternal uncle Mohammad Mofazzal Hossain met him at the State Guest House Jamuna here this afternoon.
In a meeting with the Chief Adviser, the family of martyr Abrar Fahad requested an investigation into each incident of killing by preparing a list of the victims of the attacks carried out by terrorists of Awami League and its affiliated organisations before the July mass uprising.
At the same time, Mohammad Barkat Ullah requested the Chief Adviser to take initiatives, on behalf of the government, to expedite the trial in the Abrar Fahad murder case.
Barkat Ullah said Abrar Fahad was brutally beaten to death by terrorists because he spoke for the country and its interests, and against the unequal distribution of water (of cross-border rivers).
He also said, “His (Fahad) mother still cries for her son. No other mother should have to suffer the pain of losing her child, and no mother’s chest should be empty.”
He said locals have long been demanding the construction of a bridge over the Gorai River in Kushtia.
Barkat Ullah requested the Chief Adviser to take an initiative to build a bridge there, stating that about 30,000 people have been suffering for lack of a bridge.
Abrar Fahad’s younger brother Abrar Fayyaz requested the Chief Advisor to make all educational institutions more student-friendly.
Abrar Fayyaz, a third-year student of BUET, said, “Our educational institutions are still not student-friendly. There is a shortage of labs, equipment and other facilities required for studies.”
“We have high expectations from the interim government. We want this government to take steps to make educational institutions student-friendly,” he added.
He also requested the government to take strict measures to stop ragging in BUET.
Abrar Fayyaz said: “This is not the first incident of harassment in BUET. It had happened before too. The incidents that happened before need to be investigated and tried.”
Chief Adviser Prof Yunus said the brutal killing of Abrar Fahad stunned the entire nation.
“A fair trial must be held in this incident. By preparing a list of those killed in the attacks by Awami League and its organisations’ terrorists before the 2024 July mass uprising, each incident will be investigated,” he said.
In addition, the Chief Adviser said investigations are underway into the killings committed using the state forces on the orders of the then government.
The interim government has already taken measures, he added.
